Welcome to the Ambush

The collective noun for a group of tigers is an ambush or a streak

A TON FOR TIGER ROBBIE NICHOLSON

Captain Fantastic.
Combe skipper and Tiger Robbie Nicholson

The heavy rain at the weekend might have 'put pay' to the Tigers' game against Audley Ducks at West Witney CC on Sunday, but many club sides across Oxfordshire did see action on Saturday.

Regular readers and friends of the Tigers will know Robbie Nicholson also captains Combe first XI in club cricket. This Saturday, while the rest of us were getting increasingly frustrated with the weather, Robbie really put in a skippers performance for his club side.

In a league game against West Ilsley, Robbie contributed exactly a ton as Combe amassed 277-6.

Excellent knock Robbie. But the young Tiger wasn't finished there.

After whacking the West Ilsley bowlers around, he proceeded to show them how to bowl. As Combe's opponents struggled to 105 all out, Robbie piled on the misery with an impressive 5-26 off eleven overs.

Amazing effort Robbie. Well done mate. So glad you're a Tiger!

Audley Ducks CC v SpecialEffect Tigers CC Rained Off

That's right. Audley Ducks CC captain, Charlie Read, and I have decided to make an early call on tomorrow's Ducks v Tigers fixture. I'm afraid that the call is, 'the game is OFF'.

I've just got back from West Witney CC where the lads are in action right now. Despite today's game going ahead, the pitch looks in a poor state and the outfield is wet. Even as I stood watching, the rain started coming down again. And, surprise surprise, we're forecast more heavy rain across West Oxfordshire tonight.

So Tigers, the game is off. We got lucky with the weather last week but at some point you just have to admit defeat against the Great British summer.

Thanks to all you Tigers who put yourselves forward for the game. Enjoy your Sunday!

SpecialEffect Update

Yes, by popular demand, the SpecialEffect Update is back.

So, before you sit down to watch Spain v France with your four pack of Stella (other 5% lagers are available) or head out to Izi's to dance round your handbags, here's what the good people of SpecialEffect have been up to over the past days.

This week's update leads on how SpecialEffect is helping one of brave soldiers, Rifleman Craig Wood, get back to gaming after being severely wounded in Afghanistan. And that's just for starters.

Enjoy and know there are people out there changing lives for the better ...

DES GAYLE: TIGER ON THE RUN

No pain no gain Des
Tigers' Des Gayle is running the British 10k for SpecialEffect
Support him with £2 by texting 'DESI87 £2' to 70070

Our mate Des Gayle is running the British 10k for SpecialEffect.

Lets get straight to the point here. Des is a Tiger. He's running for SpecialEffect. Its an amazing charity for amazing young people made possible by amazing older people. Though not much older.

Des only joined the SpecialEffect Tigers Cricket Club at the start of the season so many of you Tigers' regulars won't know him. I've spoken to him regularly by email though and I can tell you he is the soundest of blokes.

So why is Des running for SpecialEffect?

Well, he's a keen gamer, he works in the games industry and he knows the value of the fantastic work carried out by Dr Mick and the SpecialEffect crew.

Here's what Des told me ...

"When I was a kid, I was often left out of doing cool things. Sometimes intentionally but most of the time by accident. I love the work that SpecialEffect do to help all children be involved in all the activities that they love."
Well, that's good enough for me. I'm going to support Des and it would be fantastic if you could support him too. All it takes is a text message.

Please visit http://www.justgiving.com/AlteredDes
or text "DESI87 £2" to 70070 to sponsor!

Des is even sharing his training playlist with us. Nice one Des.

NICE TRY TIGERS BUT WITNEY RFC WIN AGAIN

See what I did there? Try? Rugby? No? Okay, lets get on with the report from yesterday's return match between SpecialEffect Tigers v Witney RFC at Charlbury Cricket Club.

They're back ... Witney RFC ... Tiger tamers

It was a strong Ambush that took to the field against the Witney Rugby lads after the mauling the Tigers took over at Carterton in May. The only noticeable absence being skipper Chris Grain who had popped down to London for an Italian the night before and never came back. Next time you're peckish Chris, go for an Indian or Chinese ... we've got plenty of them in Witney.

But, with Alan Brackley joining the Ambush for the first time this season, what we lacked in batting strength we more than made up for with bowling.

Witney RFC won the toss and put the Tigers into bat on a wicket that had soaked up plenty of rain in the days before the game. Robbie Nichoslon and Geoof Hoare looked like they were seeing the ball well enough but a difference of opinion over a quick single saw Geoff walking back to the pavilion with just five to his name. Ed Juszczak didn't hang around too long as he fell to Charlie Bennett.

With his brother missing, John Grain strode out to grab some of the glory with the bat. And so he did. Starting with a cameo to Robbie Nicholson's bludgeoning of the Witney RFC bowling, once Robbie had 'retired on 50' with a breathtaking 63 Mr Grain started to score freely himself. At one point he hit the unfortunate Will Hook for three consecutive sixes. That was until Will Hook remembered the four wickets he had taken over at Carterton and had Grain smartly caught by Owen Fowler for 38.

Tigers Man of the Match Robbie Nicholson with 63 not out and THAT catch

John Grain. Four 6's in an innings of 38

The rest of the Tigers batting was cleared up by Witney RFC's Mutchkett with very little resistence. Floyd bowled for 8, Cam Newton-Grain bowled for 1 and James Harrison dismissed in the same way for a duck. The only Tigers duck of the day, that one James.

So, with a Tigers score of 130-6 to aim at and the promise of Brackley and Nicholson pace to come, Witney RFC might have wondered if it might not be their day. Not for long.

Todd and Monks got Witney RFC off to a strong start, piling on runs despite some pretty stingy bowling from Alan Brackley.

With Stu Duff introduced to the bowling attack the Tigers' fortunes changed. Floyd at short square leg, making up for an earlier dropped chance, held on to a full-blooded pull from Todd. The opening partnership was broken.

What followed was one of the best Tigers' fielding displays we've witnessed since we first took to the field in 2009. With his opening partner one, Monks caught a top edge to another Duff delivery and Floyd was there to snap it up again. The Tigers were relieved to see the back of Monks who departed the crease with a well earned 36.

Next to go for Witney RFC was Owen Fowler. A 'Yes, yes, no', a sharp throw from Alan Brackley to the keeper from deep mid-wicket and John Grain applied the finish touch to see Owen carry on running to the pavilion for 1.

Grain combined with Rob Webb for the wicket of Charlie Bennett soon after. The slightest of nicks off the slow right-armer and Grain was happy to take a comfortable catch. Bennett, a real danger man in the previous game, gone for 18. The Ambush breathed in the sweet smell of hope. Or maybe we were just standing downwind of the Finstock sewerage works.

Right. At this point lets just take a moment to relive the brilliance of Robbie Nicholson's catch down at the long on boundary. With three catches and a run out more than we usually take in a game, Henry Lamb must have thought he was on safe ground when he went for his 'big heave' off Stu Duff. We all thought it was heading for six. Robbie didn't. Covering a good twenty yards, Robbie took the catch on the dive to send Lamb walking for 3.

Tigers' Stu Duff saw off both Witney RFC openers with a spell of 3-0-15-3

As Will Hook hung around at the crease in a support role, Simon Copperwheat decided enough was enough. Smashing a couple of fours and six on his way to a match deciding 24, Simon eventually fell foul to a mis-comunication between the wickets. A Floyd throw from square leg and Robbie Nicholson completed the run out and staked his claim to the Tigers' Man of Match.

Simon Copperwheat. A skippers innings to see Witney RFC to victory

But the Captain's innings was just too much for the Tigers to withstand. While Cam Newton-Grain and Robbie Nicholson made a valiant last-stand effort to stem the Witney RFC runs, it just remained for Will Hook and Kallis to cruise past the Tigers score with ten balls of the innings remaining.

Witney RFC finished on 131-6 to win by 4 wickets.

A great afternoon of cricket played against a smashing bunch of fellas at what is surely one of the nicest venues in Oxfordshire. Thanks to Witney RFC for a brilliant game and Charlbury Cricket Club for lending us your facilities. And a massive, massive thank you to Charlbury CC tea-lady, Cher, for a fantastic spread.

Let's end with an Aaaaaaaaah! It's Tiger Cub Wilf Brackley and Dad, Alan

WITNEY RFC TO THE RESCUE?

Witney RFC
Ready to give the Tigers another drubbing?

After some desperate pleading to our cricketing mates, it could be that the lads from Witney RFC will step in to replace West Oxfordshire Barbarians for the Sunday 17th June game at Charlbury CC.

If Simon Copperwheat and Robbie Mills can do the business, we've got game on!

WEST OXFORSHIRE BARBARIANS WITHDRAW FROM SUNDAY'S GAME

Sadly, the scheduled game against West Oxfordshire Barbarians CC on 17th June at Charlbury CC is postponed. The Barbarians have been unable to get a team in field.

I have contacted several sources in an attempt to get alternative opposition and will send updates to the Tigers who have volunteered to play as soon as I hear back.

The Barbarians' skipper very much regrets having to withdraw from the game but hopefully our appeal to other clubs will be met with success. Fingers crossed, eh?

If anyone reading this does know of a side that can step into the breach, please contact setigersxi@yahoo.co.uk.

Cheers!

Baz

TIGERS IN ACTION THIS WEEK: Robbie Nicholson

Robbie Nicholson ripped the Hailey batting apart with 7-1-11-4

After last night's report of Steve 'Alan' Brackley being named 'Richard for a Day' (or Dick of the Day as it's known informally at Charlton Kings CC), we turn our attention to young Tiger Robbie Nicholson tonight.

Robbie spent last Saturday afternoon playing for his club side Combe CC in a Telegraph Cup match against local rivals Hailey CC. The prize? A place in the Quarter Finals.

It was a day when the bowlers dominated with Combe bowling Hailey out for a Tigers-like 51. Our Robbie got his claws right into the Hailey batting and tore it apart with a fantastic 7-1-11-4.

The rest should have been easy but it seems the Hailey bowlers had something to say on the matter as Combe lost six wickets before finally drifting past the modest Hailey total. Our Robbie scored 14 of them.

Well done Robbie and to everyone at Combe CC for reaching the Quarters. More from Robbie in the coming weeks.

TIGERS IN ACTION THIS WEEK: Alan Brackley

We start this week's round up of Tigers who have taken to the field for their club sides by crossing the border to Gloucestershire. Yes, we're starting with Charlton Kings and Steve 'Alan' Brackley.

Before we go into Alan's report, let's pay homage to the good cricketers of Charlton Kings for the honour they bestowed on him last weekend.

You know there are some funny 'sorts' over the border in Gloucestershire? Well, after each game, Charlton Kings CC honour one of their team with an award called 'Richard for a Day'. I don't know what it entails exactly but, knowing that part of the country, its probably something like The Wicker Man meets cricket. I know that after reading Alan's account, many Tigers will feel they should have won a similar award many times over but lets just be happy for Alan, yeah?

Steve 'Alan' Brackley, Charlton Kings CC 'Richard for a Day'

Okay, so lets get on with the game itself.

Charlton Kings were playing an away game against the mighty Lydney.

CK lost the toss and were put into bat on a road with a damp outfield. After starting well, Kings fell away to be all out for 222 (that's not 'falling away' mate. The Tigers have only ever hit more than that twice). Our Alan was out off the penultimate ball of the Kings' innings for 5.

Lets just stop there and reflect on that 5 scored by Alan.
Al', your manners seem to fail you when playing for your club. Did we not all agree that its incredibly bad form for any Tiger below No. 4 in the batting order to trouble the scorer? Shame on you mate.
So anyway, Kings felt that on that wicket they really needed to be aiming for 280. However, 222 was something to bowl at and they were determined to make a fist of it. They failed.

The mighty Lydney piled on the misery and sailed past the total with the loss of only two wickets.

So how did Alan win the Richard for a Day award?

Bowling ten overs into a pretty stiff wind Alan was rewarded with edge after edge. All those edges mounted up to 43 runs. Final figures of 10-0-43-0. An unusually low return for our human trebuchet.

But the best was yet to come.

In a moment of calamity, Alan dropped a sitter. 'Easily the worst drop of my life', he told me later. The batsman who should have had 'c Brackley' against his name ended up having the words 'Not Out' and the number 83 against it instead. At least HE felt good about HIS afternoon's work, eh mate?

No joy with the ball, a dropped catch and an eight wicket defeat. Alan was pretty glum.

So how good must he have felt when all his team mates got together to vote for Richard for a Day and decided Alan was the man to take the award? Alan, generous as always, felt the Kings' wicket keeper should have got the award. But the lads were having none of it.
The Charlton Kings' lads shortened the name of the award to the more informal 'Dick of the Day' but I think you'll agree it still carries a certain gravitas?

Actually Al' it doesn't ... you just had a bit of a mare mate, didn't you?
